Recycling Initiative

Click here for a list of participating Ace Hardware stores in Montana, Utah and South Dakota. Participating Ace Hardware stores will collect fluorescent lights and mercury-containing thermostats.

The Product Stewardship Institute, Inc. (PSI) and Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) have partnered to design, implement, and evaluate pilot collections of spent fluorescent lights and mercury thermostats at Ace Hardware retail locations throughout Montana, South Dakota, and Utah. The project will start May 1st and end on December 31st 2008. From the results of this pilot, PSI and WVE will develop a "How To" guide that will enable other interested retailers to replicate or modify the model that is developed.

Why is This Project Important?

In recent years, the use of fluorescent lighting has increased dramatically, driven by rising energy costs and the energy conservation benefits of fluorescents. However, fluorescent lamps, as well as thermostats, contain mercury, a harmful neurotoxin that should not be disposed of in landfills or incinerators. Since these products can release mercury into the environment, they should be managed responsibly. This project provides an opportunity for retail customers to responsibly recycle their lamps and thermostats.
