WVE helps Alaska Community Fight Proposed Coal Plant
In late May 2006, WVE was contacted by citizens of Seward Alaska, where a coal-fired power plant had just been proposed.  The developer of the proposed plant, Mark Marlow, had made claims that the plant would be a "state of the art clean burning facility" similar to one recently built in Thompson Falls, MT!  WVE along with Morlene Plouzek of Thompson Falls, MT helped the folks in Seward, Alaska set the story straight for their City Council by letting them know the truth about the Thompson Falls Cogen.  We offered the following warning: if the proposed plant is modeled after the Thompson Falls Cogen, trust us, you don't want it!

The City Council heard our words and the controversy in Seward is brewing. A flurry of letters to the editor have been published in the local newspaper, the Seward Phoenix Log.  The Resurrection Bay Conservation Alliance, a local environmental organization, has distributed 2500 postcards to their neighbors questioning the soundness of the proposal.  In response the City Council has created two new committees:  one to assess the proposal and negotiate a potential power purchase agreement, and another to explore alternative energy sources for Seward.  We wish the folks of Seward luck in their fight for clean power!
